Field Trip Report:
Abernathy
Mica Mine, Above the rotted wooden frame hangs this pulley and cable from the ceiling of the mine. Notice the multiple steel hand drills that hold it in place. This electric hoist with cable is what is hooked to the pulley in the ceiling which raised and lowered the muck bucket in the vertical shaft. Me and the hoist. I looked around for a while and found my friend from several years ago. This small deer had fallen through the air vent in the ceiling of the mine and was injured or died from the fall. His bones are scattered throughout the room, I also found remnants of a box turtle that shared the same fate. The main tunnel. I can't decide if these Brown Bats are trying to stay warm or if they're just really happy to see each other! Close up of above bats. After searching this area, I decided to head back down the main tunnel and visit some of the side tunnels. As in years past, the Eastern Brown Bats and the Eastern Pipistril Bats are still occupying separate tunnels in the mine. You will not see any Pipistril Bats in the main tunnel and no Brown Bats will go into the side tunnels? Maybe these bats are territorial. |
