Abernathy Mica Mine
Mitchell County, N.C.
March 24th, 2007

photos by: Warren Falcone and Rick Jacquot

Another great trip to one of my favorite mines in the Western North Carolina mountains. As usual I got to meet many new M.A.G.M.A. members on this trip, many who had never been to this mine. We started off at the Silver Armadillo parking lot and headed to the mine where we met with several other members who had come from other directions. This was a combined M.A.G.M.A. and Henderson County club field trip. Two members from the Henderson County club were present along with around fifteen MAGMA members.

The first thing I do before digging at the Abernathy, is visit inside to see the bats etc. Some had never been in the mine, it is a great relic of our mining past and a neat place to visit if you're into that kind of stuff.

To explore the mine, you will need waders as the entrance for about the first 30 feet or so is filled with water.

I thought we had arrived to late to see the bats, but there were still quite a few to be found and photographed.
