Hello all, made a field trip to the Abernathy Mine 9-9-03. Went with fellow field trip chair Tim Barton. We headed out there around 9:00. First we searched the mine and found some very nice aragonite crystals. We also found a dead deer in the mine. It appears to have fallen through the air vent and was unable to climb back out. There are some unusual formations growing in the mine. This one looks like a cow udder. On the way we stopped and took pics of this nice waterfall. Tim seemed to enjoy the trip, it was his first visit to the mine. He hauled two five gallon buckets of rocks and his backpack full out of the mine. He also found one deep emerald green translucent apatite crystal. He will be bringing it to the Hendersonville Club meeting this month to share. Another great day of dirty digging! |
