Fieldtrip report:

South Carolina Agate Trip,
December 4th, 2004,
Gap Creek Agate

___________________

Hello members, here is the fieldtrip report for our great agate hunting trip to South Carolina yesterday, as usual we had a great turnout. Steve Penley led the M.A.G.M.A. group to Gap Creek to collect a variety of banded agate, most of us had never been to this site so it was a treat to visit somewhere new. We also had two new members join us on their first M.A.G.M.A. trip, welcome new members!. After parking at the pulloff, we hiked about a 1/2 mile to the collecting area. Finding the agate is simple, just dig into the creekbank, roll out the rocks and wash them in the creek. The agate here is small but some nice cutting material can be found. Here are a few pics:

Jerry inspecting a find.

Bob Taylor brought along his Grandson Trey.

While hunting for agate, Chris Moss found this little fellow sleeping in the creekbank.

Tena, Jerry and Bob.

Miles and Lawrence joined us on their way back from Atlanta.

Steve and Chris working the bank.

This is a nice agate that Chris Moss found.

Bob and Trey.

Below are a couple of pics of the largest agates found today, Grant found these, each piece weighs around 10 pounds.

We all found a lot of nice smaller material, i'll post pics of what I found later, as always another great day in the field with friends!
