Field Trip Report:

Buck Creek
Clay County, N.C.
February 18th, 2005

The material we were hunting is a combination of corundum, blue/gray, in a matrix of white zoisite and some hornblende mixed in. The corundum is not very spectacular, but it does make nice display specimens when mixed with the zoisite. The zoisite alone also makes nice display pieces. John D. showed me a piece he had slabbed and polished and it looked great. This stuff would be good to cut into bookends etc.

Zoisite

Zoisite with corundum.

Troy and his specimen.

Rich in the bushes.

On occasion you can find a six sided crystal in the zoisite like this one.

Close up of crystal, 3/4" across.

Always a great day when out in the field, see you next weekend.
