Fieldtrip Report:

Lake Chatuge, Clay Co., N.C.
Towns Co., Ga.,
January 28th, 2006

At our next site we found some larger pieces and a variety of colors:

Big piece of pink found by Ed.

Terry Dalton found this neat hex crystal.

Roseanna's cool cluster of blue/gray corundum crystals.

Small crystal cluster that I found.

My favorite piece of the day is this dime size pink sapphire, small but great color.

And to end the day, we got to watch Tena get stuck in the mud!, good thing new member Terry was around to rescue her 8^)

What a fantastic day at the lake, great weather, an amazing turnout for the club. Not a whole lot of great specimens were found, but that is part of the game, the lake levels are up and will remain that way until the TVA decides they need lowering again, there are numerous places at Lake Chatuge to collect corundum other than those listed in books, look for good gravel just about anywhere on the lake and you will find something, sapphires, rutile, limonite, amethyst, staurolite, spinel and so much more, club trips are not possible to many of these sites, there is no place to park all the vehicles. Take time and walk the shoreline, there is around 130 miles of it and you will find some great stuff!

See you soon 8^)
