Field Trip Report:

Crabtree Emerald Mine
Machine Dig!
Upper Grassy Creek Township, NC
May 29-31, 2009

Junior rockpup having fun.

Tom made a new friend.

Working some of the new dumps.

David Hotelling found the nicest emerald crystal of the weekend, (my opinion)

Davids emerald

After digging down about 15-20 feet into some of the older dumps, I began to unearth some old ore cart track. This track is different from the track that leads from the mine dumps into the water, it is a smaller scale than the track used in the 70's and 80's. We speculate that since this track was so deep in the dumps, it may be the first track used when the mine was opened in the 1800's. I didn't bring home a lot of rocks since I was running the machine, but it was nice to add some Crabtree Mine artifacts to my collection!

As always, another great weekend with a great group of MAGMA members. It was also nice to meet all the new members who made this their first dig with the club.
