Fieldtrip Report:

Diamond Hill Mine,
Antreville, S.C.,
February 18th and 19th, 2005
By Lee Fleming

Shirley and I traveled to the site this weekend to search for the beautiful amethyst and other quartz crystals which are being found. I arrived on Friday around 11:00 and searched the site until my hands were cut to pieces by the small but sharp crystals. I did manage to find two very nice pieces of amethyst that afternoon. The largest was a single crystal about 5 inches tall by 2 inches wide.

The other piece was a cluster of crystals about the size of an orange.

Along with these crystals, I found several pieces of orange colored quartz. One plate was about 5 inches in diameter and the other was larger than a golf ball. Both had great crystal structure.

Shirley and I traveled to the mine the next morning and arrived just as the sun came up. We immediately went to the amethyst pile and began to look for crystals. Our luck was not as good on Saturday as my luck had been on Friday. I did find another large piece of amethyst crystal cluster and some other nice small pieces.

I did take the time to look in the other holes and found the largest skeletonized quartz crystal I had ever found.

The whole trip was very rewarding and I had a lot of fun looking at the new material which has been opened since my last visit with MAGMA. It was fun to be able to dig clusters from the mud veins, to look at the black coated material in the new hole, and to find all kinds of quartz crystals in the back area where the white quartz litters the ground.

Thanks for letting us know of the new material at Diamond Hill Mine.
