Clemson University Geology Fieldtrip

What a great day of collecting!. After not getting out last weekend and needing a "Rock Fix", today was the day. John D. and I led a group of geology students from Clemson University directed by Professor Ted Wallenius, this was the third fieldtrip for the group and their class, "OLLI, Right Beneath Your Feet" that Ted teaches. John and I met the group at the Silver Armadillo parking lot this morning and then headed to the mine.

At the entrance to the Little Pine Mine

After a talk on the history and geology of the mine, we took the group inside and showed them where and how to find the garnets.

Working near the entrance of the mine.

After peeling away some of the schist that surrounds the garnets, numerous crystals were exposed and ready for picking.

Teamwork

Working on a matrix piece.

Matrix specimen collected by Ted.

Perfect weather, and what a great bunch of people to dig with, never a bad day at the Little Pine Mine.
