Fieldtrip report:

New England Collecting Trip

June 2007

Steve Bonney

I managed to forget my camera at our next destination. Guess I was too excited to start digging. Mike and his son joined me for a second day of collecting at the Case Quarries in Portland Connecticut. Here’s a beryl crystal typical for the Case Quarries.

More Case Quarry beryl crystals.

And more Case Quarry beryl crystals. There are just as many crystals on the backside.

A portion of the day’s finds.

Ferrocolumbite, Case Quarries, Portland, Connecticut.

Moose droppings, blooming bunchberry, and the smell of spruce on the way into the Pingree Ledge Quarry made it clear I had made it to Maine. I saw four moose while in Maine, nearly adding one as a large hood ornament.

Muscovite, Pingree Ledge Quarry, Albany, Maine.

Hyalite under shortwave ultraviolet light, Pingree Ledge Quarry.

Near the top of Noyes Mountain in Greenwood Maine is the Harvard Quarry. The dumps here are a little steep!

Fluorapatite, Harvard Quarry, Greenwood, Maine.
