Henderson County Gem and Mineral Society fieldtrip:

Hello all, had a great day today at Lake Douglas in Tennessee with other members of the Henderson Co. Gem and Mineral Society, I had never been to this site so it was a new experience for me. We met at 9:00 at the Superpetz parking lot in Asheville.

Papa Jacquot, Jill and Tim B. ready to hunt.

This site is known for nice double terminated quartz crystals, after collecting some of these crystals I would say they resemble small herkimer diamonds from New York. Tim Barton showed some of his mounted specimens from this site so everyone would know what to look for.

We proceeded to the lake, about an hour drive from Asheville, this is a great site for older people and kids, there is a large parking area and you only have to walk about 100 feet to the area of the lakebed where you can start collecting.

I crawled around in a big circle for about 30 minutes and found a couple of hundred of these small double terminated crystals, the size I found ranged from pinhead to about an inch long, the larger crystals were milky while the smaller ones looked like diamonds covering the lakebed, like I said kids would love this place, there are plenty of crystals to be found.

Another great day in the field 8^)

M.A.G.M.A. fieldtrip

Hello all, we had a blast at the lake today, altogether seven members of M.A.G.M.A. were present including our newest members Grant and his wife Nancy, very nice people, Grant found the biggest crystals of the day, RJ found some nice double terminated crystals with hematite inclusions which give the crystal a red hue, I think I have had my fill of quartz for a while,

ok, I must be bored, I just spent the last 2 hours high grading the crystals from todays haul, after taking about half of the material out because it was broken/not complete crystals, I ended up with 303 whole crystals, I counted them twice to make sure, I would'nt want to exaggerate the total.

303 crystals

Crystal with mud inclusion, blurry pic but I am to lazy to retake it!

Yellow double crystal

My favorite of the day is this triple

Back to corundum hunting this week!
